For quite a while now I can’t escape hearing the name Billie Eilish pop up all around me, on the radio, online and on my tv. Hearing a live version of ‘Bellyache’ on the radio just about had me hooked and I have not stopped listening since.
At just fifteen, Eilish is bound to rule the music world, with her style being described as electropop and alternative, Eilish also incorporates eclectic jazzy tones and some ballad-like tunes, meaning she can do basically anything.
Not only was her initial sound impressive but she also writes her own songs with her older brother Finneas O’Connell, a singer/songwriter himself.
Just under two months ago Eilish released her very first EP titled ‘dont smile at me’. The short album I think encompasses her distinctive sound perfectly, with songs such as ‘COPYCAT’ presenting Eilish’s badass side which contrasts her softer side in ‘ocean eyes’.
In each and every song a different idea or story is presented which makes ‘don’t smile at me’ and just Eilish’s way of writing really intriguing and amazing to listen to. In an interview with Triple J she has said “[You] put yourself in a place you would not be normally, which is like the magic about songwriting…”, which she clearly demonstrates in her eerie and fun songs like ‘bellyache’ and ‘hostage’.
Being a sixteen year old myself it’s easy to relate to Billie Eilish and the way she thinks, writes and sings. Not only is she talented but just an awesome person and deserves every bit of recognition she gets.
